In every discipline, there are always unique words used. As the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of Nigerian youth, understanding the NYSC Terminologies/unique language and acronyms associated with this institution becomes essential.

Below are some NYSC terminologies, please get acquainted with them as you will often come across them once you become a corp member.

NYSC Terminologies

NYSC

It means National Youth Service Corps. It brings together youths from Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges every year to serve their father land. Usually in non-indigenous states. You will be posted to a far place.

 

PCM

This means prospective corps member. They are recent graduates who are just about to start NYSC. They have been given call up numbers but yet to be sworn in by the NYSC. They are simply awaiting corpers.

 

CM

It means Corp member. They are PCM that have fully registered in NYSC camp and sworn into the National Youth Service Scheme. A member of the NYSC and a Federal Government kid.

 

ORIENTATION CAMP

This is the first arm of NYSC. It is the camping of the prospective corps members for 3 weeks (21days) of great training, rehabilitation and preparation for the task ahead of them.

 

PPA

This means Place of Primary Assignment. That is the exact place u will be posted, to serve after the 21 days orientation camp training. That is the place you will spend the whole of your service year immediately you leave camp. It may be School, Ministry, Bank, Industry e.t.c depending on your discipline and luck.

Currently 70% of the corp members are now being posted to schools.

 

CDS/CD

The NYSC terminologies of CDs/CD means Community Development Service. When you leave camp, you will be posted to join one of the CDS groups in your local government. That is where you will perform your duty to humanity, by meeting other corpers there to develop the community to which you are posted. CDS members do have their meetings once in a week.

You can also embark on your own personal CDS which qualifies you for an award at the end of the service year.

 

CALL UP NUMBER

A unique number associated with a registered member for the scheme. It contains the abbreviation for school of graduation, year mobilize and a special number.

 

SAO

Students’ Affairs Officer.

 

REDEPLOYMENT/RELOCATION

This is a process by which a corps member applies to be posted to ANOTHER STATE different from the state NYSC posted them for orientation camp.

 

MEDICAL FITNESS CERTIFICATE

It’s a COMPULSORY DOCUMENT which every PCM must present when the get to their various orientation camp for registration and admission in the camp. It MUST come from a GOVERNMENT HOSPITAL

 

MEDICAL REPORT

It is a comprehensive report that covers a person’s clinic history. It’s used to fill redeployment form in camp, exemption from camp or exit from camp.

 

DIRECT POSTING

The process of being posted to the PCM’s state of choice other than the state NYSC would post them.

 

DG

Director general who is the head of the NYSC scheme

 

ST

State coordinator who is the head of the NYSC scheme at state level

 

AI

Area inspector is in charge of the programme in a given area

 

ZI

Zonal inspector is in charge of the programme in a given zone. Both the corpers and the LGI answers to him

 

LGI/LI

Local inspector is in charge of the programme under a local government area. He/She is your boss in your local government during your service year

 

LG

Local government is the area a local inspector covers; you’ll meet your CD group here once a week. CM are posted to LG after camp.

CLO

Corps Liaison Officer. This is a corps member who was made the ‘head’ of other corpers posted under a certain Local Government Area. Vital information is most times passed across from the LGI to the corps members through your CLO.

 

LETTER OF DEPLOYMENT/PPA LETTER/POSTING LETTER

That is the letter you will be issued while leaving camp after the 3 weeks orientation. A Letter that will indicate the local government and the exact place you are posted to. On it, is the local government and PPA you have been posted to serve. It would be given to you the last day on orientation camp.

 

CAMP DIRECTOR

The head camp official in charge of camp activities

 

PMP

Project Management Professional. A professional course available in NYSC.

 

POP

Passing Out Parade. The end of your Nysc service year.

 

AJUWAYA

A slang for serving members of the Nigerian Youth Service Corps. It is derived from the pidgin version of the phrase “As you were” (A military term that is the equivalent of “at ease”, the opposite of “attention” or “alert”

 

(POP) PASSING OUT PARADE

That is the end of your NYSC year. It is last parade before getting your NYSC certificate.

 

STATE CODE

This is the official state identification number given to all corps members after registration in camp. It contains your state abbreviations, year and batch and a unique number.

 

SENATE LIST

This is the list of graduates received from different institutions eligible to register for NYSC.

 

REVALIDATION

Application for revalidation is when the PCM registered previously but failed to go camping after printing call up letter

 

REMOBILIZATION

Application for remobilization is when the PCM went camping but failed to report to PPA or absconded.

 

DOMICILE LETTER

A letter from a husband to NYSC applying for the redeployment of his wife to his state of residence stating clearly his home address.

 

RSM

An RSM serves as a general overseer to all the platoons. Platoon commandants report directly to RSM while RSM reports directly to captain

 

“YOU ARE WRONG”

Used in camp by soldiers if you’re in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing.

 

CORPERS WEE

An exclamation to a corp member of which the response is waa.
