The Stuart Hall Foundation, in partnership with the University of Sussex, is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD scholarship for the 2025-26 academic year.
This prestigious opportunity is available to Black British postgraduate researchers pursuing studies in the Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences. Inspired by the legacy of Professor Stuart Hall, a pioneer in race and cultural studies, the scholarship empowers scholars to explore critical issues related to race, social justice, and inequality in modern societies.

The scholarship provides comprehensive funding for up to 4 years:
- UK PhD fees for 4 years (or 1-year Master’s + 3 years PhD fees).
- A maintenance allowance at UKRI levels (£19,237 annually).
- Up to £3,000 for research and fieldwork expenses.

Eligibility Criteria
This scholarship is specifically for:
- Applicants starting a new PhD (or integrated Master’s + PhD) in Autumn 2025.
- Candidates whose research addresses social justice issues and contributes to dismantling barriers faced by marginalized groups.
- Applicants demonstrating academic excellence and/or prior relevant experiential learning.
- Eligible Schools at the University of Sussex
Candidates must secure a PhD position in one of the following schools:
- Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities
- School of Global Studies
- University of Sussex Business School
- School of Law, Politics and Sociology
- School of Education and Social Work
Research Focus Areas
The Stuart Hall Foundation is particularly interested in research proposals that align with Stuart Hall’s work, such as:
- Postcolonial and Diasporic Modernities
- Cultural Studies
- Race, Ethnicity, and Visual Cultures
- Radical Thinking on the Left
- The production of “the other” in contemporary societies (e.g., institutions like citizenship, education, law, and politics).
