Learn, Apply and Grow

In 1979, the Anambra State Government approved the operation of the institution in Oko town, within the Orumba North Local Government of Anambra State, as a College of Arts and Science.

Driven by the dynamic leadership of its inaugural chairman, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, a former Executive Vice President of Nigeria, the roots of what eventually became the polytechnic trace back to the vision of the Oko Progressive Union (OPU).

On June 28, 1980, a significant milestone occurred as the institution was elevated to the status of a College of Arts, Science, and Technology. This upgrade, appealing to young school leavers, drew a considerable influx of students seeking the higher certificates offered by the College.

The formal establishment of the institution as the Anambra State Polytechnic, Oko, took place through Edict No. 12 of 1985, published as a supplement to the Anambra State of Nigeria Gazette No. 24, Volume 10, dated June 27, 1984.

In a final transformative move, the Federal Government assumed control of the State Polytechnic in 1993, leading to its renaming as the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

This evolution reflects our commitment to providing quality education, fostering growth, and creating opportunities for individuals to learn, apply their knowledge, and ultimately flourish in their chosen paths.

Strategically positioned, the institution finds itself in close proximity to vibrant industrial centers and commercial hubs, surrounded by diverse local crafts.

For instance, Awka is renowned for its blacksmith and iron works, Nnewi is a hub for industry and technological products, while Onitsha and Aba are celebrated for their bustling commerce and industries. The climatic conditions in our host community, Oko, range from 28 to 42 degrees centigrade.

As one of the rapidly advancing tertiary institutions in Nigeria, we hold a strong vision for the future. Our commitment to growth is evident in the functional memoranda of understanding we have established with various universities, both within and outside the country. These partnerships further enhance the educational experience we offer.

Notably, our polytechnic operates across three campuses, providing a comprehensive and dynamic learning environment. We take pride in our strategic location and collaborative initiatives, fostering an atmosphere of innovation and development.

The main campus at Oko which occupies a total land area of 89 hectres.

  • Ufuma campus: This occupies a total land area of 52 hectres.
  • Atani campus: This occupies a total area of 40 hectres.
  • International Linkages and collaboration:

The institution at the moment has entered into research collaboration with the following Universities in the spirit of South-South Cooperation:

Federal Polytechnic Oko currently emerges as a top choice for candidates participating in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This recognition is well-deserved, and it comes as no surprise that the late Distinguished Senator Uche Chukwumerije, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, declared the institution as “the fastest growing in the country” during an official oversight function visit.

The administration’s success stems from the Management Team’s remarkable levels of discipline, courage, dedication, diligence, and commitment. The Rector deserves special acknowledgment for their humble drive and commitment to prudent financial management.

This commitment is evident in the responsible utilization of internally generated revenue, strategic capital allocation, effective utilization of interventionist grants, and successful collaboration with philanthropists.

Through these financial strategies, the administration has accomplished a multitude of projects and programs outlined in this document. These achievements not only make us proud but also contribute to the institution’s growing reputation.

Federal Polytechnic Oko’s commitment to excellence, combined with effective financial management, has propelled it to the forefront of preferred educational institutions, as recognized by both candidates and esteemed individuals within the education sector.
